Repentance in The Way

June 8, 2016

Repentance is to stop doing wrong and do what’s right, right?

Yes, you are right but what is the right thing to do?

Do what the bible says…if it says stop stealing, then we need to stop it.

Yes, we do, but how do we stop it, and again, what do we do instead?

We just stop it that’s all and we put our faith in Jesus to deliver us unto salvation.             But what is faith? Faith has substance and evidence. What is that substance and evidence?

Whew… when you start trying to explain The Way of true worship it can sound like an interrogation by detectives, only you don’t know the answers they want to hear; and when you say: repentance is to stop doing wrong and do what’s right and I agree but say it’s wrong because – to stop; doing wrong and do what’s right requires that you know what the right thing to do is. You get mad and say it’s in the bible. And I say yes, it’s in the bible but your understanding is incomplete.

That is why several verses tell us that all sin has a motive! A reason for doing the sin. And Jesus tells us that all motives fall under three categories; worries, riches and/or pleasures.

So you see, even though you want to stop sinning, let’s say stealing for example, if you simply stop the act of sinning you will still suffer from having a desire that doesn’t mind being satisfied by your stealing; That is still in you, and that is what keeps you from maturing in your faith.

And when you once again experience the temptation to sin for those hidden motives that seek to worry, be rich and/or derive pleasure, then you may or may not steal again, but when you are weak in your faith you are also weak against the doing of sin. And if all you do is resist, or as you say, stop sinning, then your desire will overcome you and you will once again fight for your freedom from sin. From the same sins desire to express a worries, riches and/or pleasure. That is why we are told to “…with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;…”Eph. 4:17-24NIV

Deceitful desires!! You see, stealing isn’t the problem but the desires that you fulfill with whatever it is you stole or whatever you used the stolen for, whether it be money for drugs, sex, food… That’s the problem!!!

And if all you do is stop stealing then you will never understand the underlying cause nor will you find the loving alternative that you need to submit to doing in our Lord Jesus.

So it goes, and when you see the Way of love and so choose to abide in it, it will either come with your salvation, or an increase in the knowledge of faith, for faith expresses itself through love. But resist your temptation to hold onto a blind understanding and revealer of nothing is to your shame.

In Him,

J.J.
